The 61st running of the Irish Derby was held on Wednesday 23rd June 1926 over 1 mile 4 furlongs of The Curragh. Subscriptions were 65 sovereigns with a pot of 5250 sovereigns, 700 sovereigns to the second and 200 sovereigns to the third. The winner was owned by the Maharajah of Rajpipla, bred in Ireland by W F Power, trained by Charles Bartholomew and ridden by Steve Donoghue. The winner won by 1/2 length in 2 minutes 41.2 seconds, with a further half a length between second and third.

OWNER PROFILE
The Maharaja of Rajpipla was born on 30th January 1890 in the state of Gujarat in India. He was the 36th and final ruler of the Narmada District of the Gujarat State, although he spent much of his life at his English estate, The Manor in Old Windsor. He was an avid man of the turf and remains the only Indian owner of an Epsom Derby winner which he achieved in 1934 with his horse appropriately named Windsor Lad (SR 2100). Prior to this Classic win he had achieved a similar Classic win in the 1926 Irish Derby with Embargo (SR 1953) trained by Charles Bartholomew and ridden by Steve Donoghue. He died on 29th April 1961 at The Windsor Manor aged 61.

FORMLINE:- The winner conceded 7 lbs to the majority of the field but won by half a length in 2 minutes 41.2 seconds. Despite this solid victory he was unplaced in the English 2000 Guineas behind Colorado (SR 2005). Tenacity was unplaced in the Epsom Derby behind Coronach (SR 2089). Glen Albyn was unplaced in the Doncaster St Leger behind Coronach (SR 2089).
